Police: Man dead, 3 in custody after possible drug deal, hit-and-run

Incident occurred in 200 block of Peabody Ave

SAN ANTONIO – A man is dead and three people are in custody Monday morning following a possible drug deal and overnight hit and run on the city's Southwest Side.

The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Peabody Avenue, not far from New Laredo Highway and Somerset Road.

Police said a man in his mid twenties was standing next to a pick-up truck when a maroon car hit him. The driver of the vehicle got out and a second driver in a green Kia following him checked on the victim, but then got right back into their cars, police said.

Police said the maroon car was so badly damaged it broke down in the middle of the street, so both the passenger inside the vehicle and the driver ditched the car, getting into the following Kia.

A witness called the authorities and all three were arrested in the 6100 block of Monterey on the West Side after an off-duty constable spotted them.

Officials said the driver of the maroon car has told them that the accident was the result of a drug deal and robbery attempt. Police said they are working to confirm the story.

The victim was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition where he later died.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
