San Antonio police said the SUV had stalled out in the middle of the far right lane of traffic. The driver of the big rig was not able to stop in time and crashed into the rear of the vehicle.

The impact compressed the SUV like an accordion and pushed the vehicle 50-60 yards from the initial point of impact, police said.

The driver of the SUV, 73, died on impact.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was injured.

A large amount of fuel and coolant spilled, slowing cleanup of the scene. Police said they anticipate all lanes of traffic to reopen around 9 p.m.

Police said they do not expect to file charges against the driver of the 18-wheeler.
