Chilly, damp weekend ahead with periods of heavy rain

1-3 inches of rainfall will be common in area through early Monday

SAN ANTONIO – Overnight lows in the 40s and 50s were milder than previous mornings, as moisture has started to stream into the area.

The much anticipated rainfall discussed this week is now beginning to take shape, all courtesy of an upper-level storm system that is now digging into Baja California. This puts Texas in a prime position to get moisture from the Pacific and the Gulf. Add northerly winds on the surface and you get an overrunning pattern that leads to cloudy, dreary and damp conditions.

We’ve already seen periods of light to moderate rain around Bexar County, as well as surrounding areas.  The activity is scattered at this point, but the closer we move into Saturday, the more the rainfall will begin to fill in and become more widespread.

There are numerous activities happening this weekend, including the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and Hops for Haiti. If you plan on attending these or have other outdoor plans, jackets, umbrellas and ponchos will be needed. Runners in the marathon will need to take precautions to stay warm and as dry as possible.  Temperatures will hover in the mid- to lower-50s all day long on Saturday and Sunday.

There will also be periods of heavy rain throughout the day. The best chances for this occurring are to the north in the Hill Country and to the southeast/east of San Antonio, closer to the Gulf Coast. One to three inches of rain will be quite common in the region by Monday morning with 2-4+ inches possible for those who experience the heavier activity.

Severe weather potential will remain low, but there could be a few watches and advisories for some localized flooding. In addition, some storms may get strong enough to kick up winds around 20-30 mph, but other threats will remain minimal. In the event a severe thunderstorm warning is issued by the National Weather Service, the KSAT Weather Authority Team will update information as necessary.

On Monday afternoon, the upper-level storm system will exit and we’ll see some clearing and sunshine through Tuesday evening with milder temperatures. On Wednesday, the next cold front will move through and kick up winds to windy levels and increase clouds once again. Temperatures may dip back into the 30s and low-40s on Thursday and Friday mornings of next week.
