Storms slam South Texas with hail, high winds; NWS reports flooding in Schertz, New Braunfels

SAN ANTONIO – Rain is in the forecast for much of the work week. Some models are forecasting up to three inches of rain across South Texas by Friday.

1:30 AM UPDATE: The NWS says they are getting several reports of flash flooding in the Schertz and New Braunfels. Pictures on social media show cars stalled in high water along I-35.

The National Weather Service has also issued a flood warning for the Guadalupe River in Hunt and New Braunfels (below the Comal River) and Comal River in New Braunfels. Minor flooding is expected on both rivers.

12:45 AM UPDATE: A flash flood warning has been issued for Comal, Bexar and Guadalupe counties until 3:30 a.m. More than 3 inches of rain has fallen and more is expected. According to the CPS Energy power outage map, more than 10,000 customers, primarily on the city's West Side are without power.

11:50 PM UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm warning for Bexar, Atascosa counties until 12:30 a.m. KSAT Sports Director Greg Simmons says there are construction signs blown over on Highway 281 north near Stone Oak. He also reports standing water along the highway.

11:15 PM UPDATE: The primary concern for the storms in Comal County and Northen Bexar County are winds up to 70 mph. In southern and western Bexar County, the storm is producing large hail. 

11 PM UPDATE: A storm with hail 3-4 inches in diameter is entering Western Bexar County. The storm will impact areas like Sea World, Alamo Ranch and Lackland. People and pets needs to be in a safe and secure structure while these storms impact the area.

10:15 PM UPDATE: NW San Antonio is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 11:15 p.m. Large hail, up to three inches in diameter, have been reported with this storm.

9:45 PM UPDATE: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Medina County until 10:15 p.m. The storm is north of D'Hanis and Hondo, moving to the east at 20 mph.

The severe thunderstorm watch has been extended east to include: Bexar, Kendall, Atascosa, Gillespie and Comal counties until 1 a.m.

TUESDAY PM UPDATE: The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for counties west of San Antonio.

Medina, Bandera, Frio, Kerr, Real, Uvalde, Edwards, Zavala, Kinney, Maverick and Val Verde counties are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m.

TUESDAY AM UPDATE: KSAT 12 meteorologist Adam Caskey said a stray shower or two could develop during the first part of Tuesday, but most of the rain and storms will likely hold off until Tuesday evening through Tuesday night. 

Conditions should favor the development of strong to severe storms with straight line winds and large hail the primary threats. Expect lows near 70 in the morning and highs in the mid 80s by the afternoon.

MONDAY PM UPDATE: A very active weather pattern continues for South Texas. A strong storm system is moving into the area late Tuesday which could bring severe weather.

Main threats will be large hail and damaging winds along with flash flooding. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Forecasted rainfall accumulations could range from 1 inch to 3 inches with isolated totals over 4 inches.

Timing looks to be mainly Tuesday evening into early Wednesday morning. Though this system moves out on Wednesday, another good chance for rain is in the forecast for Thursday and slight chances will last through the weekend.
