New name proposed for Greenway Trails

Proposal on table to rename Greenways after Howard Peak

SAN ANTONIO – A public hearing was held Monday night to discuss renaming San Antonio's Greenway Trails after former Mayor Howard Peak.

Peak was mayor from 1997 to 2001 and prioritized a system of hike and bike trails along Salado and Leon creeks.

Peak led campaigns in 2005 and 2010 to renew taxes that helped add a total of 68 miles of trails to the Greenway system.

"He's done such a great job over the years, just getting three taxes through, keeping the program going," said District 8 City Council Member Reed Williams. "That's more than we can even dream of, so it's phenomenal."

The Greenway System is currently funded for 79 miles of trails and the city's goal is to have a total of 120 miles.

A committee made up of residents will make a recommendation to the city council about the proposal to rename the trails.
