Southwest Workers' Union protests Lackland shelter

Group wants undocumented kids freed

SAN ANTONIO – A group with the Southwest Workers' Union gathered outside Lackland Air Force Base Friday to protest the housing of thousands of undocumented immigrant kids from Central and South America at shelters across the state.

The group says the children are being unjustly held in those facilities, including Lackland in San Antonio.

The protesters claim the children are feeling violence and extreme poverty and deserve to be free.

"There's a lot of party politics being played around, the Democrats against the Republicans. They need to focus concretely on the rights and the human rights of people," said Chavel Lopez, Southwest Workers' Union. "We're all people, it doesn't matter what part of the planet we're from. We're people and we should not be suffering."

The group says the also want to reverse what they call "failed free trade policies."
