SAN ANTONIO – A holiday outing turned tragic Saturday afternoon at Canyon Lake when a man drowned while swimming just off the shore.
State game wardens said they recovered the body of the drowning victim just before 7 p.m. at Jacob's Creek Park.
The man had been swimming early in the afternoon, and went under the water while family and friends watched.
Carlos Benavidez of San Antonio said he was at the lake with his 5-year-old son when he noticed something was wrong.
"I had my son in the lake and they started evacuating everybody for about an hour to two hours," said Benavidez. "They started looking for a body."
The game wardens searched for the victim for more than five hours and finally found the man not far from shore.
Game wardens said the drowning victim was a 47-year-old man from San Antonio.
Jacob's Creek Park had been closed to the public for two months before opening Saturday for the Independence Day holiday.
