Mother mourns after son hit, killed while riding bike

SAN ANTONIO – Vincent Luna, 15, passed away early Thursday morning from injuries he suffered when he was hit by a pickup truck while riding his bike Wednesday afternoon.

“He was my son. He was my baby,” said Chantell Fonseca, Luna’s mother. “It was hard for me to see him in the hospital with all these tubes down his throat and he was bleeding all over his head and face.”

Luna was riding west in the 400 block of Sherman when he tried to cross North Hackberry Street and was hit. The driver of the truck stopped and attempted to help Luna according to the police report. He was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center with serious head injuries.

Fonseca was at work when the accident happened but was at the hospital when Luna passed away just after midnight Thursday.

“That was really hard for me to see that,” she said. “[Staff] doing CPR on my son, trying to revive him and they didn't, they couldn't.”

Luna had just finished his freshman year at IDEA Carver College Prep a few blocks away. Counselors and staff from the school came by Fonseca’s home Thursday to offer their condolences.

“He was a very likeable individual, one of those stellar students that gets sometimes lost in the mist because he's so quiet but we know his presence has made an impact at our school,” said Chang Yu, principal of the school. “It's going to be a very big hole that he's leaving. He's got a tremendous legacy even in the short time that he was with us, only for about a year.”

Vincent’s younger brother also attends the school. Funeral arrangements have not been set. The school has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for the family.

The driver is not expected to face any charges.
