SAN ANTONIO – A police officer with Von Ormy was airlifted to a hospital after a vehicle struck their patrol car on Interstate 35.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said the wreck occurred around 1:30 a.m. on the main lanes of Interstate 35 near Loop 1604 on the Southwest Side.
The officer had stopped to help block traffic for a stalled 18-wheeler. The officer was exiting the car when a vehicle crashed into the rear driver’s side of the marked patrol unit, striking the officer.
Officials said the officer suffered a head injury.
Airlife was dispatched to the accident and the officer was taken to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries, BCSO said.
The driver, 45, was taken into custody on suspicion of drunken driving, according to officials. BCSO says charges are forthcoming.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 at Loop 1604 were closed following the incident but have since reopened.
