Truck theft, chase in Southwest Side ends with suspect, teen and officer hurt

A juvenile suspect who allegedly stole a truck Tuesday and ran over a girl who tried to stop her led officers on a Southwest Side chase that ended when she collided with a police SUV. Matthew Brown said the incident began at about 8:30 p.m. when the suspect allegedly stole a black truck from a home in the 1900 block of Cupples Road. The suspect then ran over a teenage girl who was attempting to get the truck back, he said, breaking the girl’s leg. The officer in the SUV, who has been with the department for 2 years, was taken to an area hospital for treatment as a precaution. Brown said the chase was authorized by a sergeant because of the robbery and the assault on the teenage girl.

A man was shot by police Monday evening after he fired an entire magazine at an officer but only hit his body camera during a traffic stop in the Southwest Side. The officer was not shot but his body camera, which was located on his chest, was hit, the chief said. The officer returned fire and hit Cardenas in his arm and abdomen. Cardenas was wanted on two warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault with bodily injury-married. He was charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer and the warrants.

SAN ANTONIO San Antonio arson investigators are looking for the cause of a fire that broke out Monday morning on the porch of a Southwest Side home. No one was home when the fire started shortly before 4 a.m. in the 1300 block of Keats Street. The home is actually more of a freestanding apartment behind a main house. At the apartment, arson investigators appeared to focus on items from inside the home. Firefighters said they believed the fire may have been accidental, but they called in arson investigators to make sure that was the case.

Aggravated sexual assault suspect killed in officer-involved shooting on SW Side: SAPD

SAN ANTONIO - An aggravated sexual assault suspect is dead after a shooting involving a San Antonio police officer during a Lone Star Fugitive Task Force operation on the Southwest Side, according to the San Antonio Police Department. The shooting was reported Wednesday night at a Walmart gas station near Southwest Loop 410 and Ray Ellison Boulevard. When a San Antonio police officer, who is part of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, approached the suspect, the officer saw the suspect had a long rifle with a drum magazine attached, McManus said. The officer felt compelled to use deadly force, fired, I believe, one time at the suspect, and (the suspect) was subsequently transported to the hospital, McManus said. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the suspect was involved in a case that happened a couple of days ago.

'Suspicious' fire set to Halloween decorations outside apartment unit

SAN ANTONIO - Arson investigators have been called in to investigate a suspicious fire at an apartment complex on the city's Southwest Side early Wednesday morning, San Antonio police said. Firefighters responded around 4:30 a.m. to the apartment complex in the 7100 block of New Laredo Highway after receiving reports of a ringing alarm. Firefighters said it appears someone set fire to a Halloween decoration hanging on the door of a third-floor apartment. Authorities say the fire never went beyond the door, but it did set off the sprinkler system and the building alarm, alerting residents. The sprinkler system dumped water onto the concrete landing outside the apartments but very little got inside anyone's home, firefighters said.

SAN ANTONIO - Police are investigating a theft on the Southwest Side. Russell Willis said his family was cleaning out a garage on Old Sky Harbor in hopes of planning a yard sale. Items were left on the lawn, and when Willis said his 74-year-old mother was watching over the belongings, a couple of men grabbed $600 worth of items before getting away. 'They left in a white truck," Willis saiid. "My mom was terrified.

Wheelchair-bound man in critical condition after stabbing on Southwest Side

SAN ANTONIO - A man is in critical condition after he was stabbed in the stomach on the citys Southwest Side. Police said the stabbing happened near McCauley Avenue and Barlite Boulevard, just west of I-35, on Thursday afternoon. Passersby found the wheelchair-bound victim lying under a tree with stab wounds and called in the stabbing, police said. Police said they do not have a description of the attacker, nor were there any witnesses at the time of the stabbing. The man was taken to the Brooke Army Medical Center in critical condition.

The crash occurred just after 10 p.m. in the 600 block of Harriman Place, not far from Highway 90 and Frio City Road. According to police, the driver rolled his vehicle into a utility pole and then into a yard. Police said the utility pole was knocked down and tore into the wires, causing a few homes to be without power overnight. Police did not give a reason as to why the driver lost control.

The incident began just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday when deputies started chasing a driver near Loop 1604 and Somerset Road. Deputies said during the chase the driver, for an unknown reason, rolled their vehicle at the intersection of I-35 and Cassin Lane. The unidentified driver was taken to University Hospital. Deputies did not say what started the chase or what charges the driver now faces.

SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio police and Crime Stoppers are looking for the person responsible for a fatal hit-and-run on the city's Southwest Side. Police said the driver of the vehicle fled the scene without stopping to render aid. Anyone with any knowledge of the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (210) 224-STOP. Tips can also be texted to CRIMES (274637) or by visiting the Crime Stoppers website. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

Skeletal remains found in boarded-up home on SW Side

SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio police are investigating after skeletal remains were found in an abandoned home on the city's Southwest Side. Around 2:32 p.m. Tuesday, officers with the San Antonio Police Department went to the 2600 block of West Gerald Avenue where the remains were found inside the residence. When they went inside, the witness said they found the remains backed up on the floor. An SAPD sergeant said it appears the cause of death was not trauma-related and that investigators believe it could be a sudden death case. The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office is helping with the investigation and to determine the cause of death, the sergeant said.
