SAN ANTONIO – A multi-family rental development called the West End on Frio is celebrating its grand opening this week.
The 24-unit rental housing development located at 711 S Frio Street will provide affordable and workforce housing opportunities close to downtown on the near-West Side in District 5.
Ten of the units will be available for families whose income is at or below 50% of the area median income — no more than $37,050 for a family of four.
Another two units will be available for families whose income is at or below 80% of the area’s median income — no more than $59,300 for a family of four.
The first phase of the project was funded by the 2017-2022 Neighborhood Improvements Bond Program.
The apartments at West End on Frio are 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom floorplans with high-quality finishes. The complex was originally slated to be only 12 units, but the developer, Terramark Urban Homes, was able to buy an adjacent parcel of land to double the project to 24 units, city officials said.
“This development demonstrates that through careful and thoughtful design, we can take a lot as small as 0.3 acres and develop it into small-scale affordable rental housing that San Antonio hasn’t seen in decades,” said Verónica R. Soto, the Director of the City’s Neighborhood and Housing Services Department
The $20 million from the bond program is the first-ever housing-related bond for the City of San Antonio.
“The primary goal is to purchase and prepare sites for private sector development of single-family or multi-family workforce housing construction,” according to a press release.
