Authorities identify 4-year-old girl who drowned in family pool

Child initially reported missing in the 9100 block of Ocean Gate

Update (6:30 a.m. Thursday): A 4-year-old girl who drowned at a family pool on Wednesday night has been identified.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified her as Jazida Hernandez Cervera.

Original (10:57 p.m. Wednesday): A family is grief-stricken after a 4-year-old girl drowned in an above-ground pool during a gathering at a Southwest Side home, according to San Antonio police.

Officers were initially called for a missing child around 8 p.m. Wednesday in the 9100 block of Ocean Gate.

The girl got away while the family of 15 was gathered outside, and after 30 minutes of searching, they called authorities for help.

Police arrived and canvassed the outside of the house. A short time later, officers found the little girl faced down in an above-ground pool in the backyard of the home.

The child was taken out of the pool and police began life-saving measures.

She coughed up water on the officer and was taken by EMS to a hospital, where she later died.

The family told officers the ladder to the pool was removed and it is unknown how the little girl got inside.

Investigators are working to determine what led up to the incident.
