A man who allegedly charged at an off-duty detective with a tire iron was fatally shot by the officer in Southeast Houston, police said.

Houston police officers said the incident happened after the man was escorted out of a restaurant following closing time at 11 p.m. Sunday, according to KPRC, KSAT’s sister station in Houston.

The man left the restaurant, located on Gulfgate Mall, but returned minutes later with a tire iron in his hand, police said.

A restaurant employee reported him to the security guard, who works as a detective with Liberty County District Attorney’s Office.

Police told KPRC that the man charged at the off-duty detective with the tire iron, and the detective then shot the suspect multiple times.

The suspect ran outside and collapsed, police said. He died at the scene.

Police said the detective was not injured, and that they are investigating the shooting.

The suspect’s identity has not been released.
