AFGHAN ADJUSTMENT ACT

Just 4,775 of the 77,000 Afghans resettled in the U.S. under a special legal process have secured permanent legal status for themselves and their families.

Retired military top brass wrote a letter urging Congress to pass the Afghan Adjustment Act, allowing Afghan evacuees to get permanent residency quicker.

Many of the thousands of Afghan evacuees who resettled in the U.S. are still seeking permanent residency in America more than a year after fleeing Afghanistan.

U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro said the Afghan Adjustment Act pending in Congress, which could affect tens of thousands of humanitarian paroles, “should be adopted by the end of the year.”

Without congressional action, the tens of thousands of Afghans we evacuated to the United States may be deported in the coming year.

More than 88,000 Afghans have arrived in the U.S. since the Taliban takeover last year. But most of them only have temporary permission to stay.
