Hoosiers bring back former star player Woodson as coach

Indiana will hire former star player and longtime NBA coach Mike Woodson as its new head coach. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II, File)INDIANAPOLIS – Mike Woodson won one Big Ten title and one NIT championship while playing for Bob Knight. Indiana hired the former star player as its new coach Sunday, issuing a four-word statement on Twitter — “Welcome home, Coach Woodson” — before the formal announcement. Woodson returned to the New York Knicks as an assistant this season after previously serving as New York's head coach for a little more than two seasons. Matta, who played at Butler and later served as head coach at Butler and Xavier, also reportedly interviewed for the coaching job.

Indiana fires Miller, raises private money to cover buyout

Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson decided keeping Miller would prove even more costly. Dolson fired Miller on Monday, armed with enough cash from private donations to cover the buyout and ready to answer a fan base angered by four straight mediocre seasons. Indiana hasn't been to the NCAA Tournament since 2016, hasn't reached a Final Four since 2002 and hasn't won a national championship since 1987 — the longest drought in school history. McRobbie accepted the recommendation and then gave Dolson permission to find private money to cover the costs. Miller successfully recruited some of the state’s best talent, including three straight Indiana Mr. Basketball Award winners -- Romeo Langford, Trayce Jackson-Davis and Anthony Leal.

Edey, No. 23 Purdue beat Indiana for 9th straight time

Purdue has won nine straight in the series, matching the second-longest streak in school history. The Boilermakers also won nine straight from 1929-35 when future coach John Wooden was playing, plus they won 12 straight from 1908-14. It quickly cut a 29-20 deficit to 35-31 early in the second half before the Boilermakers answered with eight straight points. Starting guard Armaan Franklin missed his fourth straight game (right foot). The Boilermakers won despite going 6 of 21 on 3s and having 15 turnovers.

Michigan leaps Baylor into second behind Gonzaga in Top 25

Gonzaga continued to hold down the top spot in the Top 25, just as it has all season, receiving 59 of 63 first-place votes among national media members. Illinois climbed one spot to fourth and Iowa gave the Big Ten three teams in the top five. They have a showdown with the Illini on Tuesday night before wrapping up the regular season with a home-and-home series against Michigan State. That’s a big part of what they’re doing.”West Virginia continued its steady climb, up four spots to No. The newcomer Boilermakers and sliding Badgers give the Big Ten six teams in the Top 25, one fewer than the poll-leading Big 12.

No. 3 Michigan continues to roll with 73-57 win at Indiana

They've also won eight straight over Indiana, three in Bloomington, and it didn't take Michigan long to break this one open. AdAljami Durham led Indiana (12-12, 7-10) with 15 points while Race Thompson added 11 points and six rebounds. Michigan made Indiana uncomfortable against full-court pressure, stayed in front of the Hoosiers in half-court defense, and challenged shot after shot. Indiana: The Hoosiers trailed 22-21 with 8:36 left in the first half — and then let another one get away. Indiana: hopes to earn a split in the season series Tuesday at Michigan State.

Big Ten moves men's tournament from Chicago to Indianapolis

(AP Photo/Doug McSchooler)INDIANAPOLIS – The Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday that its men's basketball tournament will move from Chicago to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the site of this year's Final Four. The tournament will be played March 10-14 just a few blocks away from Bankers Life Fieldhouse where the women's tourney will take place the same week. Big Ten officials see the advantages of Indianapolis as a tournament site, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Local leaders have spent two months scrambling to accommodate the NCAA, which announced last month that all 67 men's tourney games will be played in Indianapolis and its surrounding communities. Now the Big Ten is returning to a city that has hosted 11 of the previous 23 men's tournaments and 23 of the league's 26 women's tournaments, though this one comes with two new wrinkles.

Franklin's late shot sends Indiana past No. 8 Iowa 67-65

Indiana guard Armaan Franklin (2) shoots the winning basket during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game against Iowa, Sunday, Feb. 7, 2021, in Bloomington, Ind. Franklin sank a 15-foot, tiebreaking jumper with 1.8 seconds left to cap off a late rally that gave the Hoosiers a 67-65 victory over No. “If you’re going to take the last shot, that’s the guy we wanted to get the ball," Miller said. Iowa has lost two straight overall, four of its last five and both games this season to Indiana. Indiana improved to 2-5 against ranked opponents this season — both against Iowa.
