Authorities who investigated a 2019 mass shooting that left nine dead in Dayton, Ohio, say they found no evidence that the gunman targeted the sister who was among the victims.

The FBI says Dayton mass shooter Connor Betts fantasized about mass shootings and murder-suicide for at least a decade before his 2019 attack that left nine dead.

Had he been convicted of a felony, his purchase would've been barred under federal law. A lawyer for the gun shop said it complies with federal background check laws. It was then shipped to a Dayton-area firearms dealer, in accordance with federal law. Federal law allows people as young as 18 to buy semi-automatic weapons. His gradual accumulation of guns went undetected because federal law doesn't require licensed gun dealers to alert the government about rifle purchases.

Ethan Kollie, a friend of Dayton, Ohio, shooter Connor Betts, was sentenced Thursday to 32 months on two gun charges. The sentencing comes after Betts opened fire in a popular nightlife district last August, killing nine and injuring 27. Prosecutors didn't claim Kollie participated in Betts' plans for the mass shooting. He was sentenced to 32 months for each count but will be allowed to serve those sentences concurrently. Kollie must also serve three years probation and will no longer be able to purchase weapons, WHIO reported.

U.S. Attorney Benjamin Glassman charged Betts friend, Ethan Kollie, 24, of Kettering, with making a false statement regarding firearms. Kollie kept the items at his apartment to help Betts hide them from Betts parents, according to an affidavit. There is no evidence and no allegation ... that Kollie intentionally participated in the planning of the Aug. 4 shooting, Glassman said, noting that the investigation into the shooting continues. Kollie also told authorities he smokes marijuana every day and had been doing so for 10 years, Glassman said. (CNN) - A person who provided Dayton shooter Connor Betts the body armor he used during his attack will face federal firearms charges, a law enforcement official with knowledge of the case told CNN on Monday. The suspect also falsified information on federal firearms forms related to two handguns and a pistol version of a rifle, which the person owned, the source said. Those three weapons were not used in the Aug. 4 attack, the source said. The source would not identify the person being charged but characterized the person as Betts' friend. He also expressed interest in committing a mass shooting, Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said.

Ethan Kollie told investigators just hours after the shooting that he bought the equipment and kept it at his apartment so the 24-year-old shooter's parents would not find it, according to a court document. The accusations came as prosecutors unsealed charges against Kollie that they said were unrelated to the Aug. 4 shooting in Dayton, Ohio.
