Back-to-back: SaberCats shutdown Eagles, win District 31-6A crown
EDINBURG — The Edinburg Vela SaberCats secured their second consecutive District 31-6A championship with a 35-7 victory over Mission High in The Monitor’s Game of the Week on Thursday at Richard R. Flores Stadium. The SaberCats improved to 10-0 on the year and 8-0 in district play, while the Eagles, who have already locked up a playoff spot of their own, dropped to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in 31-6A competition. Edinburg Vela athlete PJ Rivera scored two rushing touchdowns and one receiving score while gaining 135 yards of offense. The district championship is Vela’s fourth in five years under fifth-year head coach John Campbell, and its sixth in program history since the school began competing at the varsity level in 2012. The SaberCats have a bye week during Week 11 and will take the field again during the bi-district round of the playoffs against a District 32-6A opponent to be determined.

The rivalry between the PSJA High Bears and PSJA North Raiders will take center stage as The Monitor’s Game of the Week for Week 8. The longtime rivals find themselves and playoff contenders set to collide for bragging rights and positioning in the District 31-6A standings. PSJA North (5-1, 3-1) is riding a three-game winning streak entering the matchup, while the Bears (3-3, 2-2) will be out to bounce back from a Week 7 loss to district leader Edinburg Vela. It will also be a matchup of contrasting offense with the Raiders ground-and-pound style of play and the Bears’ fast-paced passing attack. Kickoff between the Bears and Raiders is slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

Flores Stadium in Edinburg. We made some adjustments at halftime and I thought we did well in that situation, but it’s back to work,” Edinburg Vela head coach John Campbell said. Harlingen will look to bounce back with another non-district bout against Laredo United (0-1, 0-0) at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10 in Harlingen.
