Last of quarantined evacuees depart JBSA-Lackland

SAN ANTONIO โ€“ The last of the quarantined evacuees from the Grand Princess cruise ship were released from their two-week, federally mandated quarantine at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland on Wednesday, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services officials said. About 100 evacuees all ended their quarantine this week. Twenty people were released Monday, 75 were released on Tuesday and the remaining seven departed Wednesday morning, according to an HHS spokesperson. Fifteen of the quarantined evacuees tested positive for COVID-19 while in San Antonio, including one of the Wuhan evacuees, nine of the Diamond Princess evacuees and five of the Grand Princess evacuees. An HHS spokesperson said all have now been medically cleared and released from quarantine.

51 Texans Arrive for Quarantine In San Antonio; More Inbound Flights Scheduled

A plane carrying 51 evacuees from the coronavirus-stricken Grand Princess cruise ship landed at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland early Thursday morning. The plane is the second to arrive in San Antonio from Oakland, California, where more than 2,000 passengers have disembarked since Monday, en route to quarantine facilities in Georgia, California, and Texas. Mayor Ron Nirenberg said the flight that landed at 4:48 a.m. Thursday was carrying Texas residents who will remain in San Antonio for the duration of a federally mandated 14-day quarantine. Only Texas residents will remain at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland for quarantine; other evacuees will return to their home states. Nirenberg said that the biggest priority is to prevent and delay transmission of COVID-19 in San Antonio and Bexar County.

US considering discouraging some travelers from cruises

The United States is considering ways to discourage U.S. travelers from taking cruises as part of a broader Trump administration effort to limit the spread of coronavirus, according to four officials familiar with the situation. The administration could advise some or all U.S. travelers to temporarily avoid taking cruises in the face of a growing number of coronavirus cases on cruise ships, officials said. Carnival Corp dropped more than 2%, Royal Caribbean fell more than 4% and Norwegian Cruise Lines stock was flat. The Cruise Lines International Association said this week cruise lines would take steps to limit coronavirus concerns, denying boarding to all persons who had traveled from hotspots including South Korea, Iran, China and parts of Italy. The group also said cruise lines would conduct illness screening for U.S. citizens who have recently visited those destinations.

Coronavirus test kits flown to cruise ship idled off San Francisco

The diagnostic sampling kits were flown by helicopter to the cruise ship Grand Princess, which California Governor Gavin Newsom has said would be kept offshore until passengers and crew who have fallen ill can be tested for possible coronavirus infection. Two passengers who traveled on the same ship on a voyage last month between San Francisco and Mexico later fell ill and tested positive for the coronavirus. It was not immediately clear what would occur should anyone now aboard the ship test positive. She said the ship might be directed to an arrival point other than San Francisco. The predicament of the Grand Princess was reminiscent of the Diamond Princess cruise liner that was quarantined off Japan in February and was for a time the largest concentration of coronavirus cases outside China.

A Princess Cruises ship is again the source of a potential coronavirus outbreak

Princess Cruises said it will test some of the passengers and crew aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship, which California health officials said is the site of another COVID-19 outbreak. The ship, which was on a two-week voyage to Hawaii, was ordered to return early to San Francisco, California Gov. San Francisco officials did not say what would happen if people on board the ship test positive for COVID-19. Princess Cruises is also the operator of the Diamond Princess ship, which was the site of what might have been the first major COVID-19 epidemic outside of China.
