COVID-19 pandemic blamed for dramatic rise in domestic violence cases in Comal County in 2020
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – Domestic violence is on the rise in Comal County and the COVID-19 pandemic is to blame, officials said. “The numbers are staggering,” said Comal County District Attorney Jennifer Tharp. Tharp said domestic violence arrests were at 66% last year compared to 53% in 2019. Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds agrees with Tharp about what’s triggering the spike in crimes. ”The stress brought on by the epidemic, itself, and the increased usage of drugs and alcohol brought forth a number of domestic violence cases last year”, Reynolds said.
District Attorney says driver shocked with Taser by ex-New Braunfels cop was ‘overly dramatic’
Meyer noticed Crawford’s dirty license plate as the two were traveling north on IH-35 on the evening of Jan. 15. Meyer approached Crawford’s vehicle with his gun drawn, an action that did not follow New Braunfels police protocol, Tharp wrote. As Meyer continued to yell at Crawford, Crawford began shouting back at Meyer. “However, Officer Meyer did not attempt to deescalate the situation.”Meyer pulled Crawford’s arm as he was exiting the car and ordered Crawford on the ground. Despite his charges being dismissed, Crawford lost his job and is currently unemployed, according to his attorney.
