Liberty University and Falwell: A bond that's hard to break

Jerry Falwell Jr. has been toppled, at least temporarily, from the presidency of evangelical Liberty University, but whether he will break permanently with the Christian institution that is synonymous with his family name is another matter. Jerry Falwell Sr. into the ministry, took over as president following his fathers death in 2007. The vision laid out by Falwells father rests in part on athletic success, which has improved under his son, who has outfitted the Liberty Flames with top-notch facilities. Adam Laats, a professor at Binghamton University in New York who studies American education, predicted that Falwell would return to Liberty not as president but in another capacity. Harkening back to a sentiment expressed by the elder Falwell, Carson observed: Its not Jerry Jr.s university.
U.S. regulator receives over 5,000 complaints of coronavirus scams
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Trade Commission said it has received 5,149 complaints related to coronavirus schemes in the first three months of the year, with claims of $3.46 million in fraud losses. Of the complaints, 423 came from people aged 60 and older, FTC spokesman Peter Kaplan said. The FTC said that the median losses cited in the complaints were $580 because of some large outliers. The coronavirus, which causes the sometimes devastating respiratory illness COVID-19, has killed more than 1,200 Americans. We are concerned that further action is needed to protect the financial well being of seniors who lose an estimated $3 billion annually from financial scams, the lawmakers said.feeds.reuters.com
$10 toilet paper? Coronavirus gouging complaints surge in US
In all, 41 states responded with numbers that included both tips and formally filed complaints against mom-and-pop stores and big-box retailers alike. In Maine, investigators had photographic evidence from a shopper showing the $10 rolls of toilet paper. Oklahoma’s attorney general is shifting agents to its consumer protection unit. Both were targets last week of cease-and-desist letters from New York's attorney general, and the federal government has sent seven warning letters over false claims. In Michigan, Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office issued cease-and-desist letters instructing businesses and online sellers to correct their pricing or risk further action.
