China sends more warplanes as Taiwan honors late leader

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen speaks during a memorial service for the late former Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui in Taipei, Taiwan on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020. On Saturday, Beijing dispatched 19 more warplanes, two of which were bombers, according to Taiwan's Defense Ministry. Lee had built a separate Taiwanese political identity, distinct from mainland China, which claims Taiwan as part of its own territory to be reunited by force if necessary. The Trump administration has taken multiple steps in recent months to strengthen its engagement with Taiwan, angering China. Krach is the second high-level official to visit Taiwan in two months, following U.S. Health Secretary Alex Azar in August.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said two bombers and 16 fighter jets from China crossed into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone. Krach is in Taiwan on Thursday for the second visit by a high-level American official in two months, prompting a stern warning and threat of possible retaliation from China. China blasts US for Taiwan visit while virus spreads at home

The comments came a day after Azar accused China of failing to warn the rest of the world about the coronavirus. He abandoned the millions of people who are struggling with illness and visited Taiwan instead to stage a political show, Foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a daily briefing. The Trump administration has repeatedly accused China of withholding information from the World Health Organization and the international community as the virus began to take hold. Azar's trip to Taiwan angered China because it considers the self-governing island part of its territory. On Wednesday, Azar visited a face mask factory and paid respect to the recently deceased former Taiwanese president, Lee Teng-hui, before leaving Taiwan.

Former president who brought direct elections to Taiwan dies

Local media are reporting that ex-Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui, who oversaw the islands transition to full democracy, has died. (AP Photo/Chiang Ying-ying, File)TAIPEI Former Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui, who brought direct elections and other democratic changes to the self-governed island despite missile launches and other fierce saber-rattling by China, has died. President Lees contribution to Taiwans democratic journey was irreplaceable and his death is a great loss for the country," current President Tsai Ing-wen said in a statement. In 1990, Lee signaled his support for student demands for direct elections of Taiwans president and vice president and the end of reserving legislative seats to represent districts on the Chinese mainland. His election was virtually guaranteed by a split in the Nationalist Party, which had two representatives in the race.
