Kenyans Kamworor, Jepkosgei claim New York Marathon titles

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Kenyan half marathon world record holders Geoffrey Kamworor and Joyciline Jepkosgei powered to victories in the New York City Marathon on Sunday. Kamworor, 26, took command in the final two miles for the victory over compatriot Albert Korir (2:08:36) and un-sponsored Ethiopian Girma Bekele Gebre (2:08:38). Kamworor told reporters having his training partner, world fastest marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge, at the finish line added extra motivation. My focus was to finish the race, said Jepkosgei. The 2018 Boston Marathon champion said that she had not decided whether she would run in the Olympic marathon trials, while top mens open division finisher Jared Ward said Sundays race had put Olympic qualifying into sharp focus.

Geoffrey Kamworor and Joyciline Jepkosgei, the men's and women's winners of the 2019 NYC Marathon. (Reuters)(CNN) - Joyciline Jepkosgei ruined her esteemed countrywoman's chance at a fifth women's title in the New York City Marathon on Sunday. It was a double for Kenya, as Geoffrey Kamworor won the men's division, his second NYC Marathon victory. The world record holder in the half marathon, Jepkosgei finished first among tens of thousands of competitors, according to a tweet from the New York City Marathon. The 26-year-old gained an appreciation for running long distances as a youngster, trotting 5 kilometers to and from school every day, his NYC Marathon biography says.

Past winners at core of Big Apple marathon

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Past winners will look to build on their dynasties at the New York City Marathon on Sunday, with returning champion Mary Keitany poised to reclaim her crown and a trio of veterans favored in the mens division. FILE PHOTO: Runners race during the 2018 New York City Marathon in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, New York, U.S., November 4, 2018. Marathon is not easy, my friend.A month-and-a-half after setting a world record in the half marathon, Geoffrey Kamworor was not fazed by New York Citys varied terrain, where he claimed his maiden World Marathon Major title in 2017. I did what I normally do to run a marathon. The womens field appears more lopsided, with returning champion Keitany the favorite after reigning Boston Marathon champion Worknesh Degefa dropped out earlier this month, citing a foot injury that caused her to lose too much training time.
