For example, one program participant who worked two jobs and wasn't entitled to paid time off, was able to take unpaid time off when she contracted COVID-19 — and still pay her bills. One SEED participant said the stipend helped alleviate their anxiety to the extent that they were able to stop taking medication they had relied on previously.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey donates $15 million to help cities provide guaranteed income to their residents

Now, one initiative is getting a $15 million donation from Twitter CEO and billionaire Jack Dorsey to help put such experiments to work. The organization is Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, a group of about 30 mayors across the country who have signed on to test guaranteed income pilot programs in their cities. This summer, he founded Mayors for a Guaranteed Income to help other mayors across the country establish similar programs. The $15 million provided by Dorsey will help fund the guaranteed income pilot programs. Tubbs said he hopes the program can help set an example for political leaders in Washington, D.C., to follow.

Mayors vow to launch guaranteed income programs across US

Mayors in at least 25 cities — from Los Angeles to Paterson, New Jersey — have pledged to support such programs as part of the group Mayors for a Guaranteed Income. They are led by Michael Tubbs, the 30-year-old mayor of Stockton, California, who launched one of the country's first guaranteed income programs last year with the help of private donations from Silicon Valley. The idea of guaranteed income programs has been around for decades, but it got a lot of attention in the U.S. as the centerpiece of Andrew Yang's failed bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. “We understand that a guaranteed income is not a panacea for everything (but) is a powerful tool that provides a floor for everyone." But some of the other programs outlined Wednesday by mayors at a news conference would rely on a mix of public and private money.
