Lyft has agreed to protect the rights of blind and disabled riders to travel with service animals under a Minnesota settlement that applies nationwide.

A state investigation launched after George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer has determined that the department has engaged in a pattern of race discrimination.

MINNEAPOLIS – Minneapolis agreed Friday to ban chokeholds and neck restraints by police and to require officers to try to stop any other officers they see using improper force, in the first concrete steps to remake the city's police force since George Floyd's death. Hall told the newspaper that Floyd was trying to show he was not resisting. “I could hear him pleading, ‘Please, officer, what’s all this for?’” Hall told the Times. Bruce Gordon, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, said Hall initially gave a false name to officers at the scene. “I’m going to always remember seeing the fear in Floyd’s face because he’s such a king," Hall told the Times.

Tim Walz and the Minnesota Department of Human Rights announced the filing of the formal complaint at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. The FBI is also investigating whether police willfully deprived Floyd of his civil rights. The Minnesota Department of Human Rights enforces the states human rights act, particularly as it applies to discrimination in employment, housing, education, public accommodations and public services. The Minneapolis Police Department has faced decades of allegations of brutality and other discrimination against African Americans and other minorities, even within the department itself. Arradondo himself was among five black officers who sued the police department in 2007 over alleged discrimination in promotions, pay, and discipline.
