Fighting raged for the fifth day Sunday in northern Mozambique as rebels fought the army for control of the strategic town of Palma.
JOHANNESBURG – Rebels fought the Mozambican army Sunday for the fifth straight day for control of the strategic northern town of Palma, as reports came in that dozens of civilians have been killed and bodies were littering the streets.
An attempt by expatriate workers to flee to safety came under heavy fire, causing many deaths, according to local reports.
Earlier rebel attacks prompted Total in January to suspend work on the project to extract gas from offshore sites.
The fresh rebel violence brings into question the fate of Total's gas project, one of Africa’s biggest private investments.
