It's Durango Boulevard Again — Here's Why SA Changed It Back
After allegations surfaced that labor leader Cesar Chavez sexually abused young girls and assaulted United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta, San Antonio decided it was time for a change. The city renamed César E. Chávez Boulevard — a name it had carried since 2011 — back to its original name: Durango Boulevard, after a unanimous City Council vote. More than 18,000 people weighed in on the decision, and 64% said they wanted to go back to Durango — a number that jumped to 79% among people who actually live on the street. The name change comes with a nearly $375,000 price tag, but for residents like Rose Garcia, who grew up skating and riding bikes on Durango, it's about something money can't fully capture.
