'Cars 3', 'Rough Night', headline newest movies for Father's Day weekend

Tupac Shakur biopic 'All Eyez on Me', also to open in theaters Friday

SAN ANTONIO – With "Wonder Woman" continuing to perform well with audiences, "Cars 3" will have to come out strong and put the pedal to the metal to claim this week's checkered flag at the box office.

"Cars 3" is projected to gross roughly $56-$60 million through Father's Day weekend, which would be enough to best the Gal Gadot superhero film, one that totaled a historic $103.3 million in its opening weekend, the top domestic launch all-time by a female director.

Its been 11 years since the original "Cars" won a Golden Globe for best animated feature film.

The R-rated comedy "Rough Night" also hits theaters and may do well with audiences, offering a different fare than the other competitors. The adult-only comedy starring Scarlett Johansson is projected to make roughly $20-$25 million.

Two other films, "All Eyez on Me" and "47 Meters Down" should find solid business as well. "47 Meters Down" possesses better-than-expected reviews and stars Mandy Moore, who can also be seen on "This Is Us", one of the most popular shows on television.

"All Eyez on Me" tells the story of Tupac Shakur who remains one of the most influential people in music despite his death back in 1996. The film is expected to make $15 million to $22 million over the three-day stretch, perhaps drawing the same crowd which propelled "Straight Outta Compton" to a $60.2 million opening weekend in 2015.
