Shoppers gear up for Small Business Saturday

Shoppers flock to malls for Black Friday, but small business owners are hoping they will shop local on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO – If Black Friday isn't your idea of a great shopping day, maybe Small Business Saturday will be.

The idea behind it, shop small and make a big impact on the economy.

"I think today everybody's going to the mall and I'm hoping tomorrow they'll be coming here," said local shop owner Tara Welmaker.

Welmaker is hoping shoppers will value what is unique about her store, Violet Talk.

"We have homemade fudge, we have African Violets, we have greeting cards, note cards, things for everyone," Welmaker said.

There were no long lines at that store, or at the one two doors down, Sunset Ridge Home & Hardware.

Store owner David Doyle appreciates the opportunity to celebrate small businesses.

"The truth is when you shop in a neighborhood business, your dollars stay in that neighborhood, you shop in a national chain your dollars don't show up," Doyle said.

One didn't have to look far to find shoppers in support of Small Business Saturday, even on a Friday.

"I think we should all support small business concerns in San Antonio. They're the biggest employers, most vibrant and the ones that we need to support," said shopper Mike Sweeney.

While some shoppers want to support the mom and pop shops, others appreciate the personalized customer service they get, still others like the selection.

"We really try to support local businesses, we have for years, we don't go to the big places necessarily, we love this little place we come here all the time," said shopper Jennifer McNeil. "You can get everything from a screwdriver, to a candle, to something to cook with."
