More funds missing from South San athletic department

Second audit shows thousands more unaccounted for

SAN ANTONIO – A second audit commissioned by the South San Independent School District Board of Trustees found thousands more dollars unaccounted for in the district's athletic department.

The audit, presented to the board on Wednesday, shows ticket sales from football games over a three year span should have raised roughly $60,000 in revenue, but only $32,000 was deposited in the district's account, said Board President Connie Prado.

"It's very concerning to us because those are tax dollars, and those are moneys that should be going to the children of our district," said Prado.

After the initial audit of the athletic department, Athletic Director Gary Durbon was reassigned to a teaching position, and removed from his position as basketball coach. Durbon's attorney, Jerry Hernandez, said his client has filed a grievance with the district about the reassignment.

"I don't think that he ever should have been removed or re-assigned. I think that move was strictly political," Hernandez said. "There's absolutely no evidence that he had any handling of the money. It was never his responsibility."

Durbon has an outstanding lawsuit against Prado and fellow board member Karyn Tomlinson for defamation, after the two went public with allegations that Durbon used his office computer to view pornography.

The District Attorney's office is conducting its own investigation into the missing funds.
