The sports park is located at the edge of the San Antonio Mission Reach project. It features a new gymnasium with 6 basketball courts, which have the ability to convert to 12 volleyball courts. Outside the gym, 4 new baseball fields have been built, and three older one had been refurbished. There is also a joint football/soccer field.
Leaders say that the new complex is a chance to attract more visitors to the city.
"I know that when my girls were growing up, we were going to Austin and Houston, to facilities like this. So for now, it's going to be great that we can bring those tournaments and facilities and we will be able to showcase what we have in San Antonio," says Precinct 1 Commissioner "Chico" Rodriguez.
Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller was also on hand at Wednesday's opening to bless the sports park. The project received $16.1 million from the county and will be operated and managed by the Archdiocese.
