Dozens compete in 'Lose to Win' weight loss challenge

CentroMed sponsors challenge; winner takes home $4,000

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonians are getting fit as part of Centro Fitness' "Lose to Win" weight loss challenge.

Dozens of people competed in the challenge on Wednesday, and the grand prize winner took home $4,000.

Standing next to their old pictures, the competitors found it hard to imagine how far they had come in five months.

CentroMed began their second annual "Lose to Win" weight loss challenge in February.

"One of the areas we see is a high risk for diabetes and obesity, so we really want to do a program that can welcome the community to see what they can do to get healthy and be fit," said Ana Maria Garza Cortez with CentroMed.

As a group, the 83 participants lost 1,200 pounds. Jose Roman, the grand prize winner, lost 83 pounds.

"I feel so energized every day now. I wouldn't change it for anything else," said Roman.

Joe and Jesse Garza, a father son duo, made the challenge a family affair. The Garzas said they ran five miles together in the morning and another five miles at night.

"To lose all this weight in five months, it's amazing. Five months seems like a long time, but 60 pounds, he's lost 87 pounds... it's a lot of weight," said Joe Garza, who lost 60 pounds.

Despite the challenge being finished, the contestants said they must keep up their healthy habits.

"It was more of a self-changing thing. It's not supposed to be like a diet... it's supposed to be a life experience," said Jesse Garza, who lost 87 pounds.

The winner was chosen based on percentage of body fat lost.

Jesse Garza now plans on joining the U.S. Army.
