Man shot, killed inside Northwest San Antonio home

Victim identified as 43-year-old John Paul Gutierrez

A man identified as John Paul Gutierrez was gunned down on the Northwest Side early Sunday morning and San Antonio police are trying to determine whether the shooting was a homicide or self-defense.

Investigators said Gutierrez was with his sister and two other men inside a home in the 3800 block of Pipers Meadow when he was shot in the chest around 5:30 a.m.

Gutierrez' sister said she got up to use the bathroom and while she was inside she heard a gunshot. When she came back into the room, she saw that her brother had been shot.

Gutierrez' sister said she ran next door to her house and woke up her boyfriend. He went to the house and gave Gutierrez CPR, but Gutierrez died at the home.

According to Gutierrez' sister, the men had been arguing, but she said it did not seem serious. However, she also said one of the men threatened her with the gun.

Police had not made any arrests or filed any charges as of Sunday night. A department spokesman said the shooting may have been self-defense and witnesses were still being questioned.
