Police find child shooting suspect's car

Joe Ramos Mercado sought after shooting 2 kids Saturday

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police Sunday located the vehicle that a suspect used to get away after allegedly shooting two children Saturday afternoon.

Joe Ramos Mercado is the suspect that police say shot two children in the 200 block of Anton.

The car was found parked in front of a truck parts business in the 700 block of Springfield Road near 410 and FM 78.

"We got a call this afternoon from somebody that saw on Facebook that (Mercado) had posted that he had left the car behind a warehouse," said Sgt. Brian Custard. "I just happened to be driving down the street, looked over, and it's right in front of Ogburn's Truck Parts."

The search for Mercado began Saturday following a domestic dispute between Mercado and the children's mother.

Police say he grabbed a gun and fired as the children's mother tried to leave during the dispute.

The mother then grabbed her children and ran for help, and Mercado got in her car and drove away.

A bomb squad was dispatched to inspect the car before investigators moved in.

"We've had information that this guy does want to shoot it out with police. He's wanted, has previously been armed in a dangerous kind of thing, so as more of a precaution more than anything else, we decided to have the canine come out and check it," Custard said.

Police say Mercado is considered armed and dangerous, and anyone who has information about him should call SAPD immediately.

Mercado is facing two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and also has faces a prior parole violation.

Police say the wounded boy is now listed in stable condition after surgery at SAMMC. They say the girl is also stable at University Hospital.
