Man identified in fatal shooting of neighbor

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department has released the name of the man who they said shot and killed his neighbor Sunday afternoon in the 1200 block of Patricia Drive.

Police said Codey Blu Southerland, 25, fatally shot his neighbor, Jason Widner, 29, at his apartment complex following a dispute between the two men.

Investigators said Southerland (pictured above) fled to his apartment after Widner confronted him, and Widner followed him. Southerland then grabbed a gun as Widner gave chase.

"The suspect made it almost to the bottom of the steps and actually jumped, landed somewhat awkwardly and rolled over on to his back, turned as the victim was coming down the stairs behind him and fired one shot striking the victim in the upper body," said SAPD Sgt. Javier Salazar.

Salazar said the circumstances of the shooting do not lead authorities to believe self-defense is the cause.

Southerland has been charged with murder and is being held on a $50,000 bond.
