Basic trainee dies during fitness training at Lackland

LACKLAND, Texas – An Air Force basic trainee died Monday during a routine physical fitness training at Joint Base San Antonio - Lackland.

A representative with with Air Force base said the trainee, identified Tuesday as Kelani Thomas, 19, was given immediate resuscitation following her collapse until EMS arrived. She was then taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center, where she was unable to be revived.

Thomas, from Troy, Alabama, was in her first week of Basic Military Training assigned to the 322nd Training Squadron.

"This is a tragic event and all of us at the 37th Training Wing are grieving the loss of a fellow airman," said Col. Trent Edwards. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the trainee's family during this very difficult time."

The incident is now under investigation.
