San Antonio family involved in fatal Atascosa County rollover

DPS says sleeping driver caused fatal crash

SAN ANTONIO – A rollover wreck left a San Antonio woman dead and three family members injured. The Department of Public Safety says a sleeping driver is the cause.

The accident happened Friday afternoon on I-37 south of McCoy in Atascosa County.

State troopers say the family of four was hauling a trailer behind their pickup truck as they drove northbound on I-37 around 5:15 p.m.

Clifton Brewer, 49, told troopers he fell asleep behind the wheel, then overcorrected, causing the truck and trailer to flip.

The Department of Public Safety said the trailer crushed the truck, killing 42-year-old Melissa Brewer.

Clifton Brewer, 11-year-old Cierra Brewer, and 74-year-old Patricia Brewer were all injured and are now at University Hospital.

Traffic on I-37 slowed to a stop for miles behind the crash, and drivers were backed up for hours while investigators worked the fatality scene.
