Welder's torch ignites construction debris at downtown children's hospital

No injuries reported in fire at Children's Hospital of San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio fire crews responded to the Children's Hospital of San Antonio just before 11 a.m. Friday after smoke was reported in the basement.

The hospital, formerly known as Santa Rosa Children's Hospital, is located at 333 North Santa Rosa Street.

San Antonio Fire Department spokeswoman Deborah Foster said construction crews were working on the first floor of a portion of the hospital that is not occupied by patients.

She said sparks from a welder's torch fell through to the basement and ignited possible construction debris.

Smoke from the fire was then reported in the basement and the first floor.

Foster said no patients were evacuated from the occupied portions of the hospital, but construction crews were cleared as fire crews worked to extinguish the flames.

The hospital said the smoke affected the dietary, café, environmental and facilities services. Those departments were immediately evacuated.

A second alarm was raised and about 30 fire units responded to assist. The fire was quickly contained.

Foster said construction crews have been working on hospital renovations for several months.

No injuries were reported.
