KSAT employee honors mom with scholarship in her name

Scholarship benefits those affected by kidney disease

SAN ANTONIO – Watch "War for the Planet of the Apes" on Monday to help raise money for the Maria I. Scholarship and make a difference in someone's life.

KSAT 12 sports producer Daniel Villanueva started the Maria I. Villanueva Scholarship in 2014.

This scholarship was established through the Texas Kidney Foundation to help provide financial support for students who are currently undergoing dialysis, have received a transplant, kidney donors, and the families of dialysis and transplant patients.

Maria Villanueva was on dialysis for more than seven years in the early 1990s. During that time, she was also working full time as a medical technician at Baptist Memorial Hospital.

Villanueva continued to be a hardworking and devoted mother despite these obstacles and helped her son achieve success in private school.

She received a kidney transplant in the fall of 1999.

More than 10 years later in April 2011 Maria Villanueva passed away. The scholarship is part of her legacy.

A fundraiser is held every year to raise money for the scholarship. 100 percent of the donations go towards the scholarship.

The fundraiser is Monday at Alamo Drafthouse Park North, and a minimum donation of $25 is required per person.

If you have any questions about the scholarship or want more information about how to donate email Daniel Villanueva at Dvillanueva@ksat.com

Criteria for the scholarship:

1.  Application is open to dialysis patients, transplant recipients, living donors
or the children of dialysis patients or transplant recipients.

2.  Recipients must be residents of Bexar County, Texas.

3.  Students must be enrolling in a post-secondary education school.

4.  Each applicant must provide at least one letter of recommendation.

5.  Applicants must provide a 300-word essay emphasizing how kidney disease has affected them, their career goals, financial needs and how all of this has shaped their character.

This year three scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000.

Please RSVP to this special event to reserve your seat at Txkidney.org and look for the State of Texas Kidney Foundation table outside the theater. Attendees should pay at the table, not the box office.
