SAN ANTONIO – The family of 7-year-old Brandon Castillo is grieving, trying to cope with the loss of one of life's most precious gifts.
"It was a huge loss and there's nothing that can fix," Brandon's father, Israel Castillo Sifuentes, said in Spanish.
The second-grader was run over by a car and killed Monday night at the apartment complex where he lived with his family, in the 900 block of Allena.
Police said Castillo's family was having a get-together when Brandon ran through a gap in the fence that separated the complex and the school.
The driver told police he was not able to stop in time. Castillo was rushed to University Hospital, but died a short time later.
"He was the family’s light. He was a very loved child," Sifuentes said.
Leticia's Perez, Brandon's mother, was barely able to speak but managed to get out a few words.
"I can't talk but thank you," said Perez.
San Antonio police have said the driver will not face any charges.
