Teachers fundraise for student who was shot, lost 3 family members in Texas church shooting

FLORESVILLE, Texas – Floresville South Elementary kindergarten teachers organized a cupcake fundraiser for a kindergartener who suffered five gunshot wounds and lost three family members in the Sutherland Springs church shooting.

On Thursday, students, parents and community members brought in cupcakes by the dozens -- all for 5-year-old Ryland Ward.

Community donations were bolstered by a contribution from H-E-B, who donated two car loads full of cupcakes, cookies, muffins and cakes -- many of them made by bakers who were off the clock.

The baked goods sold fast, when a parent brought $930 one dollar bills so that every student could purchase a cupcake.

In addition to the $930 donation, parents, businesses and community members contributed funds so that any student who didn't have a dollar could enjoy a cupcake.

Ryland lost his mother, JoAnn Ward, and his two sisters, Brooke Ward, 5, and Emily Garza, 7. His mother shielded them from gunfire and died protecting her children.
