FLORESVILLE, Texas – Floresville South Elementary kindergarten teachers organized a cupcake fundraiser for a kindergartener who suffered five gunshot wounds and lost three family members in the Sutherland Springs church shooting.

On Thursday, students, parents and community members brought in cupcakes by the dozens -- all for 5-year-old Ryland Ward.

Community donations were bolstered by a contribution from H-E-B, who donated two car loads full of cupcakes, cookies, muffins and cakes -- many of them made by bakers who were off the clock.

The baked goods sold fast, when a parent brought $930 one dollar bills so that every student could purchase a cupcake.

In addition to the $930 donation, parents, businesses and community members contributed funds so that any student who didn't have a dollar could enjoy a cupcake.

The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office also stopped by to purchase cupcakes.

A post on the Floresville ISD Facebook page said the success of the cupcake sale was a testament to the strength of the community and that it gave the community hope in light of the tragic shooting.

Ryland lost his mother, JoAnn Ward, and his two sisters, Brooke Ward, 5, and Emily Garza, 7. His mother shielded them from gunfire and died protecting her children.
