Two killed in triple shooting on East Side identified
SAPD: 3 gunmen at large
SAN ANTONIO – UPDATE: The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the two people killed in a shooting on the city's East Side on Tuesday.
Sebastion Roro Montez, 16, and Corey Tyrell Byrd, 20, were shot and killed at the corner of Hays and Lockhart Streets. A third man was also shot but survived.
A second person has died following what the police chief believes was a gang-related shooting on the city's East Side on Tuesday.
San Antonio police Chief William McManus said two detectives and an officer were near the 500 block of Blaine Street around 6 p.m. to follow up on an overnight shooting.
During that time, and not more than 45 yards from where the officers were standing, McManus said three men in a black Ford Edge SUV pulled up at the corner of Hays and Lockhart streets and opened fire on three victims ranging in age from 16 to 20.
McManus said that, after the gunmen shot the victims, they began firing at the officers before speeding off northbound on Hays Street.
Despite being fired at, McManus said, one of the officers who was "within line of sight" chose not to fire back at the shooters because of the risk to innocent bystanders.
"As soon as the gun was pointed and fired, (the SUV) took off. The officer was not going to risk hitting an innocent bystander with any rounds that he might fire," McManus said. "That's how bold these three individuals are, to actually do it in broad daylight with police not 50 yards away."
Police said a 16-year-old died at the scene and a 20-year-old died at a hospital. Another 19-year-old individual suffered life-threatening injuries, but survived and is in stable condition, police said early Wednesday morning. The names of the two people killed were not immediately released.
McManus said that, in the past few days, officers have responded to at least four other shootings in the same area.
The Blaine Street shooting happened around 4 a.m. Tuesday, and just a few minutes after, officers began receiving calls about a shooting in the 2000 block of East Crockett Street.
Nearly two dozen shell casings were found on the ground between the two shooting scenes. No one was injured by gunfire in those two incidents, according to police.
At this time, McManus said investigators are working to determine if the recent shootings are all connected.
McManus said police need the residents in the affected areas to work and talk with them to deter future violence.
"We need people to talk to us, even if it's anonymously. Anonymous is fine, but we need information that will help us close this case more quickly than otherwise," McManus said.
