Local group honors veterans with wreaths at San Antonio National Cemetery

National Wreaths Across America Day is Dec. 16

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Young Marines is honoring the resting place for several famous Texans, many Medal of Honor recipients and African American Buffalo Soldiers at the San Antonio National Cemetery located at 517 Paso Hondo.

Every year, the San Antonio Young Marines honor those at the cemetery for National Wreaths Across America Day.

“Prior to us taking over, when they did ceremony in Fort Sam, they would send somebody over here with one wreath to represent the entire cemetery. So when we took over, our very first year, we wound up with over 90 wreaths,” Alberto Salas, San Antonio Young Marines unit commander said.

They remember fallen U.S. veterans, honor those who serve and teach children the value of freedom.

Salas said participating in this event is special for him.

He joined the Marines shortly after high school.

“Was serving on burial details, so buried plenty of friends and service members,” Salas said.

Salas said he hopes people recognize the importance of this event in December and join in their effort of remembering veterans.

“To be able to remember them and place a wreath on each one of these graves, it's something that makes sure that we never forget their sacrifices,” Salas said.
