Two Democratic candidates vying for the office of Bexar County Judge went head-to-head in a forum on Friday ahead of the runoff election in May.

State Rep. Ina Minjarez and former district court Judge Peter Sakai touched on many topics during the forum, including economic development, small business supporter and workforce development. They also discussed how they would prioritize federal money that has been allocated to the county through the America Rescue Plan Act of 2021, the ongoing strike involving the San Antonio Symphony and how to alleviate issues at the Bexar County Jail.

The forum, which took place at IBC Bank, was hosted by the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the South Texas Business Partnership. Eddie Aldrete, owner of Aldrete Strategic Partners, moderated the discussion.

Whoever wins the runoff will face Republican Trish DeBerry, former Bexar County Pct. 3 commissioner, in the general election in November.

The runoff is slated for May 24. The deadline to register to vote is on April 25 and early voting during the runoff will take place on May 16 through May 20.
