SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas at San Antonio has announced the groundbreaking of its forthcoming 53,000-square-foot basketball and volleyball training facility.
A groundbreaking ceremony is set for Wednesday, Dec. 18, according to the university.

The facility — referred to as Roadrunner Nurturing Elite Sports Talent (NEST) — is expected to be completed in November 2026. The project will cost $35 million and sit across from the university’s football complex.
It will feature two full-sized NCAA practice courts, locker rooms and lounges for the respective programs, and more centralized amenities.
The UT System Board of Regents approved the $35 million project during a meeting in February.
Documents from the Board of Regents’ facilities planning and construction committee indicate three funding sources, including $15,000,000 from bond proceeds, $10,000,000 in grants from Bexar County and San Antonio and $10,000,000 in designated funds.
Bexar County and the City of San Antonio, through a partnership with UTSA, each contributed $5 million to fund the project.
County commissioners approved their investment in late April.
UTSA said during the commissioner’s court meeting that a separate partnership with Visit SA and San Antonio Sports would bring outside sporting events to the complex.
“What’s good for UTSA, we believe, is good for Bexar County and vice versa. We know UTSA is a prosperity engine for our region,” Campos said during the meeting.
Campos, UTSA President Taylor Eighmy, Precinct 3 Commissioner Grant Moody and District 8 City Councilman Manny Pelaez will speak at the ceremony.
