Religious leaders from across Texas speak at Capitol opposing 'bathroom bill'

Bathroom bill debate continues among church leaders

AUSTIN, Texas – As the special session at the Texas Capitol continues, the "bathroom bill" is still a big topic of debate.

The debate is now among church leaders who are either in favor of or opposed to the bill.

"Today, we are here to identify the bathroom bill as an act of a baseless hatred," Temple Beth-El Rabbi Mara Nathan said.

Religious leaders from all over the state, including San Antonio, spoke out against the passing of the bathroom bill.

Members of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths stood together, all with the same message.

"We must join together, sisters and brothers of the faith traditions, in standing with the transgender community," retired United Methodist Bishop Joel Martinez said.

Not all religious leaders are opposed to the bill.

The Texas Pastor Council plans to hold its own event this week at the Capitol.

On its website it urges the Texas House to make a vote.

There are only two weeks left in the special session. Last week, the Senate passed its bathroom bill, SB 6, now it sits and awaits its fate in the House.
