City to hold River Barge Design Competition; part of tricentennial celebrations

Registration deadline Nov. 16

SAN ANTONIO – The city’s upcoming 300th anniversary in 20018 has inspired the City of San Antonio to reimagine the “river barge” experience, and is holding a competition to help them decide on a new design.

The City has partnered with the American Institute of Architects, San Antonio Chapter (AIA San Antonio) to hold an international design competition to create a new design for the river barges used on the San Antonio River.

The competition is open to local, national and international teams for innovative designs representative of the city. The registration deadline is Nov. 16.

“The San Antonio River is an iconic community feature,” AIA San Antonio president Nicole Marrone said. “Our chapter is honored to partner with the City of San Antonio on this project to transform the River Walk experience. Local architects applaud the City’s commitment to make the river barge a more sustainable, passenger-friendly experience.”

The competition winner will be selected in February 2016. The competition is sponsored by the San Antonio River Authority and the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau.
