UIL votes to allow John Jay player who targeted referee back on field

Victor Rojas said coach told him to hit official

AUSTIN, Texas – The University Interscholastic League voted Tuesday to allow a San Antonio high school student to play football again, nearly 18 months after he and another player blindsided a referee.

In the final minutes of the fall 2015 game against Marble Falls High School, Victor Rojas and Michael Moreno were caught on camera tackling a referee from behind.

In an interview with ABC News, Rojas said their coach told them to hit the official.

Both players were suspended from the team and the school, and the UIL voted to suspend both from any league sports. The two also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault.

Moreno has since graduated from high school.
