WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Boerne Little League was on the doorstep of a breakthrough in its Little League World Series opener, but a late-inning pitching change shut them down in the game’s final inning.
The Soundview Little League club — the Northwest region champions from Tacoma, Washington — held off Boerne 4-3 Friday afternoon in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
After Boerne loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, Soundview called upon Kasen Workman, who then induced two ground ball outs and a harmless flyout from Carson Patrick to end the game.
Friday’s opener was tight throughout. Soundview jumped on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning before Boerne answered with run-scoring singles in its half of the first and second innings.
Soundview grabbed the lead for good when Workman drilled a two-run double to put the Northwest team up 4-2 in the third. Boerne’s Anders Paulson got a run back with an RBI single in the fifth.
Because the Little League World Series is a double-elimination tournament, Boerne is not yet out of the bracket.
Boerne will get another opportunity at 2 p.m. Monday. Their opponent has not yet been announced, but the game will air on ESPN.
The Tacoma, Washington, team will now advance to face the Paseo Verde Little League team — the Mountain Region champion from Henderson, Nevada — at 8 a.m. Sunday.
