MEDINA, Texas – The Creek View Cougars are the new team on the block in Medina Independent School District, and they’re preparing to open the school’s inaugural football season.
Head coach Brant Bourquin comes from the Houston area, where he spent six years coaching in Montgomery and another six years at The Woodlands High School.
Bourquin said he looks forward to the competition in District 14-4A Division I, where wins won’t come easy.
The Cougars will also enter their first varsity season without a senior on the roster. The team is made up of juniors and underclassmen.
“It’s going to be tough for the kids, of course. They’ve never seen the speed of play at the varsity level,” Bourquin said. “I think we’re going to be ready.”
Despite their youth and lack of varsity experience, the Cougars believe they have the right mentality heading into a season filled with firsts.
The players see being part of a new program as an advantage.
“New coaches, new teammates. Some of us actually grew up together,” said Isaiah Aguilar, who plays on both sides of the ball as a lineman. “Feels great to be the first team to walk on this field and take pride in this field.”
The Cougars are embracing the challenge and looking to establish the foundation for Creek View football.
“New kids on the block, so everyone is going to doubt us. Everybody’s going to think we’re soft,” said starting quarterback Demarcus Young. “We’re looking to be the toughest team in the district.”
The Cougars will play their first home game in program history on Aug. 28 against Lytle. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
