This lunar lander is being developed by Blue Origin, with the aim to contribute to future space exploration.

This year, a blue moon will fall on Halloween -- and it’s the first blue moon we’ll experience since the last one on March 31, 2018. A blue moon, in case you’re wondering, isn’t blue in color at all — unless you’re talking about the other blue moon, which we’ll fill you in on shortly. A blue moon, by the most popular definition, according to meteorologist Paul Gross, is when two full moons appear in a single month. “We will have full moons on Oct. 1 and 31, so that means that we’ll have a blue moon on Halloween,” Gross said. The full moon to follow on the last day of the month then becomes a Halloween blue moon.

Most people have heard the phrase, “once in a blue moon” when referring to something that doesn’t happen very often. But an actual blue moon is traditionally defined as the second full moon to happen in a single calendar month, and usually doesn’t have anything to do with the actual color of the moon. In this case, our second full moon, and now blue moon, will be on Halloween night. According to earthsky.org, that will happen next in the year 2048, when a monthly blue moon falls on Jan. 31, and a seasonal blue moon on Aug. 23. If you’re wondering, the next seasonal blue moon will be August 22, 2021.

Teams led by Blue Origin, SpaceX and Dynetics won awards under NASA's Human Landing Systems program. NASA awarded the Blue Origin team with $579 million, the Dynetics team with $253 million and SpaceX with $135 million. That's a task President Donald Trump gave NASA in 2017, when he directed the agency to accelerate its efforts and land humans on the lunar surface. Blue Origin had previously unveiled its lunar lander concept, called Blue Moon. That approach, which Bezos touted in his first letter to investors 22 years ago, was made abundantly clear this week in Amazon's second-quarter earnings report. Amazon beat Wall Street estimates on revenue but missed on profit, mostly because of increased spending across the board, a pattern that's continuing. "The investment will be stepping up in 2019," Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky said during the earnings call on Thursday.

After spending $800 million in recent months to speed up package delivery, Amazon is seeing some signs of growth acceleration, at least from the first quarter. In the first quarter, Amazon reported $3.6 billion in net income and operating profit of $4.4 billion. John Blackledge of Cowen estimates one-day delivery to bolster Amazon's revenue by up to $2 billion this year.
